Shelf Life of Cosmetics

Posted: July 12, 2009 in Shelf life of cosmetics
Generally for most cosmetics the shelf life is around 2 to 3 years. However, once it is opened it differs from product to product.

Moisturizers: 4 to 12 months
Oil free foundation : 10 to 12 months
Cream or compact foundation: 18 months
Concealer: 12 to 18 months
Powder: 8 months for compact powder. 9 to 12 months for loose powder.
Blusher: 12 months to 18 months
Eye Shadow: 18 months
Eyeliner: 7 to 12 months for pencil eyeliner, 4 to 6 months for liquid eyeliner
Mascara: 3 months
Lip liner : 18 months
Lip stick: 18 months
Fragrance : 18 to 24 months.

  • If the cosmetics change color or begin to smell differently, do not think twice – just toss it.
  • Cosmetics should be kept in a cool, dark place to extend its shelf. Avoid places such as window sill, where they get affected by sunlight and temperature changes.
  • If you do not know when you purchased the product, toss it again. It can cause negative reactions on your skin.
  • As far as possible keep the cosmetics in their actual wrapping if you do not use it right away. This way you will be able to extend its shelf as there is no exposure to air.
